Reels, Instagram’s bet to compete with TikTok


What is Reels?

Reels is a new Instagram feature that allows you to record and create videos of up to 15 seconds with audio and fun effects.

It seems that Instagram wants to compete with TikTok, the Chinese video social network, which in recent months has grown in the name of users exceptionally, especially among the youngest.

This launch has started in 50 countries, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Japan and Spain.

How does it work?

With Reels you will be able to create 15-second videos with audio. You don’t need to download anything to be able to use this new Instagram tool, just update the app to the latest version. Enter the story creator and select the Reels option on the left, once you access it, you will see that on the left side of the screen you can choose audio effects, video speed, effects and timer. Well, record a single video of between 3 and 15 seconds or record several clips that make up a video of no more than 15 seconds.

Instagram offers you different options to share your Reels video, whether it is sending it by direct message, publishing it in stories, uploading it to the wall or sharing it in the explore section. In the latter case, anyone can access your content as long as you have the public account.

To watch Reels videos, with a mechanic similar to that of TikTok, you just have to access explore, a clip will appear at the top that when you click it will show you content adapted to your preferences.

Will Instagram be able to cope with TikTok with this update? The launch of this new format comes at a crucial moment, in which TikTok is under discussion in several governments, especially the United States, a fact that Instagram has taken advantage of to increase its active users, more than 1,000 million a day.
